Police in Leeds are searching for a man who showed a member of the public stab wounds to his head and body before disappearing in the city centre.
The man, whose T-shirt was covered in blood, was seen at about 02:30 BST on Tuesday near the junction of St Paul's Street and King Street, police said.
An ambulance was called but the man had left the scene and has yet to be found.
A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and remains in custody.
West Yorkshire Police believe the injured man is homeless, and he is described as white, about 5ft 7in tall with a slim face, brown hair and stubble.
He was wearing dark-coloured bottoms, possibly three-quarter length, and a white T-shirt which was heavily bloodstained.
Police said officers searched the area, supported by the National Police Air Service helicopter, but were unable to find him.
Officers from the City Neighbourhood Policing Team are helping in the search.
Det Insp Dan Ridgway, of Leeds District CID, said: "Based on the information we currently have, we have a potentially seriously injured victim who has not yet been found and may be in urgent need of medical attention.
"We are obviously very concerned for this man's welfare and urgently need to find him. We are carrying out extensive inquiries to trace his movements and would like to hear from anyone who has seen him or who has any information that could assist us."
