Leicestershire County Council needs to cut extra £12.5m

Leicestershire County Council has revealed it will need to make a further £12.5m in savings due to cuts in its government grants.

The authority said it was in addition to £66m of savings it has already outlined for the next four years.

A council spokesperson said the new cuts meant 29.5 posts would be lost in the children and young people department.

Savings are also expected to be made in environment and transport services.

County council leader David Parsons said: "We recognise that the new government has to tackle the budget deficit and is therefore ending or scaling back many of the previous government's initiatives.

"The county council is taking urgent measures to deal with this loss of funding and attempting to reduce the impact on front line services.

"But it is inevitable that some services will be scaled back."

The council's cabinet will discuss the cutbacks at a meeting on 27 July.
