New £1m Mountsorrel recycling centre opens

A new £1m recycling centre in a Leicestershire village has opened to the public.
The county council-run site on the edge of Mountsorrel replaces the facility at Sileby.
The building of the centre, on Granite Way, met with opposition from local residents amid fears it would lead to more noise, pollution and traffic.
The council said the centre would be more efficient and have better access than the previous site.
Landfill reduction
Protesters had claimed the site was too close to residential areas with more than a dozen houses backing on to the centre.
Residents will be able to recycle items including cooking oil, Tetra Paks, and batteries as well as dispose of household rubbish, helping cut the amount of waste sent to landfill, the council said.
Tony Kershaw, county council cabinet member for waste management, said: "We are making it easier for residents by replacing an old-fashioned site with a state-of-the-art facility offering excellent access.
"We're opening in time for Christmas - so everyone can make use of the new site during the festive clear-outs.
"Reducing the amount of rubbish sent to landfill is a top priority. Leicestershire is already the top county partnership for recycling but we're keen to increase this further."
