Snow disrupts roads in Leicestershire and Rutland

Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary road travel

Motorists are being advised to take extra care on the roads, especially on minor routes, because of severe weather conditions.

Many roads, including the A42, have been disrupted by the snowy and icy weather.

In Leicester, driving conditions have been described as "hazardous" on Welford Road, particularly near the A563 Asquith Way junction.

Problems have also been reported on the A6003 in Rutland.

Motorists have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel as further heavy snow is expected to fall during Wednesday.

Matthew Lugg, director of highways at Leicestershire County Council, said: "We've been out on the main roads twice and we'll get the day crews out with the plough fitted, but I think the advice is don't travel unless you have to."

East Midlands Airport said there were no reported problems with flights but warned some might be delayed due to adverse weather at other airports in the UK and Europe.

Bus companies Arriva and First are both reporting only slight delays to their services.

Blaby District Council said refuse and recycling collections in Glenfield, Kirby Muxloe and Leicester Forest East had been suspended due to the severe weather conditions.

An extra waste collection for properties that were missed will be carried out on 29 December, the council said.

North West Leicestershire District Council suspended refuse collections but said they would try to catch up during the week.
