CCTV cameras fitted in Leicester taxis

Brand new CCTV systems are being fitted in about 20 taxis in Leicester.

The initiative comes after a recent spate of attacks on cab drivers in the city.

It is hoped the cameras, purchased by the Safer Leicester Partnership, will deter passengers from becoming violent or aggressive inside the taxis.

Sgt Caroline Graham, of Leicestershire Police, said the scheme aimed to protect both drivers and travellers through offering reassurance.

She said: "Taxi drivers and passengers should both feel safe from the risk of physical and verbal abuse.

"What we want is for the visibility of the cameras to encourage responsible behaviour within the taxis and offer reassurance and sense of safety to those travelling through Leicester."
