Plans for a new Tesco store in a Leicestershire town have been approved by council planning officials.

The company was one of three supermarkets which competed to set up in Coalville.

North West Leicestershire District Council also considered bids from Asda and Sainsbury's.

After submitting a revised design, Tesco was granted permission to build a store on a site between Whitwick Road and Hotel Street.

The new superstore is expected to create about 300 jobs.

Tony Fletcher, from Tesco, said: "We are delighted with the approval and look forward to finalising the details and delivering a new store for Coalville."

He could not say when work was expected to begin.
