Antoin Akpom Leicester stab death: Man guilty of murder

A 19-year-old man has been found guilty of murdering football coach Antoin Akpom on a Leicester street.

Jurors at Stafford Crown Court deliberated for 10 hours before unanimously convicting Hussain Hussain of stabbing Mr Akpom, 20, last year.

He died in hospital after he was knifed in Kent Street shortly after leaving work in a primary school.

The jury will return on Wednesday to consider its verdict on co-defendant Abdul Hakim who denies murder.

The court heard that a family of four died in an alleged arson attack on a house seven hours after the stabbing in what is feared to be a revenge attack on the wrong house.

Hussain, a Somali refugee of no fixed address, told the court he stabbed the father-of-one because he "feared for his life".

The jury saw CCTV footage from the Kent Street area of the city showing Mr Akpom getting out of a car to confront Hussain and Mr Hakim.

Mr Akpom could be seen running towards a gym before jogging back towards the defendants, followed by a group of up to nine people.

Hussain said he stabbed Mr Akpom out of fear with the 10in knife, which he said Mr Hakim had dropped.

The jury will resume its deliberations on Mr Hakim, of Wood Hill, Leicester, at 10:00 BST on Wednesday.
