Albert Newman named as fatal East Midlands M1 crash driver

The crash happened on the M1 near Kegworth at about 02:00 BST, police said

An 87-year-old man who died in a crash on the M1 after driving the wrong way on a carriageway, has been named.

Albert Kenneth Newman, from Nottingham, was at the wheel of a Mazda Premacy when it collided with a Ford Transit van near Kegworth in Leicestershire.

Michael Luciw, 27, from Nottingham, who was a passenger in the van, was also killed in Monday morning's crash.

The driver of the van was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham where he remains in a stable condition.

Highways England confirmed Mr Newman's car was heading north on the southbound carriageway before the collision.

Mr Luciw's mother, Andrea Shelton, said in a statement: "Michael was a loving father, son, brother, uncle, grandson and nephew".
