Both crashes led to road closures and lengthy delays
Two drivers have died in separate crashes involving cars and lorries on the M1.
A 70-year-old man was killed when his Volvo and a lorry crashed near junction 28 on the northbound carriageway in Derbyshire at about 04:00 BST.
A female passenger from the car is in a critical condition.
Another man died when his BMW and a lorry crashed on the southbound carriageway in Leicestershire three hours later.
Leicestershire Police said a 51-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving over the Leicestershire crash.
Derbyshire Police has appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage of the Volvo crash.
The M1 was closed on both sides near the crash scenes for several hours but had reopened by 13:20 BST.
A third crash involving a lorry and two cars led to the closure of the A38 between Alfreton and the M1 but that road has also reopened.

The M1 southbound was closed between junctions 20 and 19 after the crash
