Police said they carried out extensive inquiries but found the incident did not take place

Police have dropped an inquiry into a report of a girl being approached and grabbed by three men near a school in Leicestershire.

Leicestershire Police published an appeal on Tuesday as part of their investigation.

Officers were told it happened in Richmond Way, Oadby, between 08:05 and 08:30 BST on Monday.

But the force has now said it has been established the incident did not take place and no offence was committed.

Leicestershire Police said it was reported the men got out of a black vehicle and approached the girl.

Officers said they were told the men then grabbed her arm but she was able to get away.

As part of the investigation officers said they spoke to the girl and her family along with staff and students at nearby Beauchamp College.

'Significant distress'

A Leicestershire Police spokesperson said: "We are aware that information about this report was circulated on social media by others before it was investigated by police.

"Making a false allegation or posting misinformation on social media can cause significant distress and will have implications for other people.

"We urge people not to get drawn into things circulating on social media but to work with us to ensure proper checks are carried out."
