South Wigston: Large fire sends plume of smoke over town

Dozens of firefighters tackled a fire at a commercial unit that sent a plume of black smoke over a Leicestershire town.

Emergency services have been at the scene of the blaze at the Paragon building in Saffron Road, South Wigston, since Thursday morning.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service was first called at about 09:45 BST.

Fire chiefs urged residents to close their windows and told others to avoid the area.

The road, between Marstown Avenue and Tigers Way, has been closed in both directions, police said.

The fire is now under control but firefighters will remain on site through the night.

Callum Faint, chief fire officer at Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, said disruption was likely to continue for more than six hours from 12:00.

Eleven fire engines from stations across Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire have been in attendance, as well as two aerial ladder platforms and a water carrier.

The Paragon company, which has a total of 17 sites across the country, provides services to businesses.
