In a statement on Wednesday, Det Insp David Greenhalgh, of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), said officers were still trying to establish the full circumstances surrounding Mr Macdonald's death.

He said: "Support continues to be provided to Mr Macdonald's family and we continue to appeal to anyone with any information who has not yet spoken to us to make contact.

"We understand there will be concern in the community but please be assured that a full investigation is ongoing to determine what has happened.

A 56-year-old man, from Grantham in Lincolnshire, was arrested on suspicion of Mr Macdonald's murder. He has since been released under investigation.

The inquiry is being linked to the death of another man, who died after the car he was travelling in was pulled over by police on the A52 Bingham bypass.

Officers gave first aid to the man, who was also 46, but he was pronounced dead at the scene on 9 November.

A non-police issue firearm was discovered in the silver Mazda Temura, said the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has launched an investigation.
