A man has been arrested and an American bully XL has been seized after reports a security guard was bitten by a dog.

Police said they were called to Highcross Shopping Centre in Leicester at about 12:30 GMT on Saturday.

It was reported a security guard had been bitten by a dog when the owner was refused entry into a shop.

Officers later arrested a man in Silver Street on suspicion of allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control in a public place and causing injury.

Police said he had since been released on bail and the dog had been taken to a place of safety.

The security guard sustained an injury to his arm and leg, and was discharged from hospital after treatment.

His injuries were not believed to be serious.

It will be illegal to own an American bully XL in England and Wales from 1 February.

The ban is being introduced in response to a number of attacks involving the breed.
