Leicester: New 20mph limit plan for five city areas
- Published
New 20mph speed limits are set to be introduced in five parts of Leicester.
The limit will be placed on roads near Braunstone Frith Primary School, around Calver Hey Road and the streets near Wolsey House Primary School in Beaumont Leys, Frolesworth Road in New Parks and Osmaston Road in Stoneygate.
The city council said the areas were chosen after residents asked for action to tackle traffic issues.
All five areas will have the new limits in place by spring 2024.
In Braunstone Frith, dozens of streets will have speed limits cut to 20mph, including those north of Scudamore Drive, east of Liberty Road and as far north as Dupont Gardens and Cranstone Crescent.
Speed cushions will also be installed in Liberty Road and Fulford Road, along with two raised zebra crossings near the school as part of the same scheme, which will cost about £85,000 in total.
A 20mph zone costing £8,000 will also be put in place on several streets to the east of Liberty Road.
This will comprise the area between the junction of New Parks Boulevard and Liberty Road in the south, and Bringhurst Road and Musson Road in far north and west.
In the Calver Hey Road area, a new 20mph limit will be imposed on the streets between Anstey Lane and Heacham Drive, as far as Great Meadow Road.
Work in that area will cost £65,000 and include speed humps, which would be put in place along Calver Hey Road and Great Meadow Road.
The scheme for Osmaston Road will expand a 20mph zone, which is already in place in the southern part of Evington.
The £35,000 project will include more than two dozen streets to the east of East Park Road and south of Chesterfield Road.
Another £25,000 is due to be spent on bringing in a 20mph zone in the streets around Wolsey House Primary School, in Beaumont Leys.
The scheme will include streets to the north of Orton Road, as far as Thurcaston Road, where a series of speed humps is also planned.
