James Nutting was arrested near the scene of the attack

A man has been jailed for attacking a police officer in Leicester.

James Nutting, of Beaumanor Road in the city, approached PC Jagruti Chhaganlal while she was on duty near his home in August.

The 45-year-old punched and kicked the officer multiple times before walking off.

He admitted to Section 18 grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to three years and six months in prison at Leicester Crown Court on Thursday.

Leicestershire Police said PC Chhaganlal had previously dealt with Nutting after reports of him racially abusing and making homophobic remarks to neighbours.

The attack left her in hospital with a laceration to her head as well as swelling and bruising on her face and arms but she has since returned to work on restricted duties.

Chief Constable Rob Nixon said violence against emergency service workers would never be accepted as part of the job

Chief Constable Rob Nixon said: "This violent attack on one of our officers while on duty left me deeply troubled and reflective about the unacceptable nature of assaults on police officers.

"This incident is a stark reminder of the risks they face daily while working tirelessly to serve and protect the community.

"It is utterly unacceptable for those who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe to be subjected to abuse and violence in the line of duty."

Det Con Kate Dabrowska, the investigating officer, said Nutting walked off after attacking PC Chhaganlal "with no remorse for his actions".

"Luckily there were some people nearby who saw what happened and came to the officer's aid before emergency services arrived," she said.

"There is no doubt the impact of what happened will stay with [PC Chhaganlal] for some time. A scar under her eye is a daily reminder of what she was subjected to.

"Policing was a job she loved, and the incident has knocked her confidence and made her think twice about her career in the force."
