A main route in Leicester has closed after a water pipe burst.

London Road has been closed in both directions at the Knighton Road junction and pedestrian access has also been restricted.

Severn Trent has apologised for the inconvenience and said it was working "as quickly as possible" to finish repairing the pipe.

The busy road will have to be resurfaced once the repairs are complete.

A spokesperson for Severn Trent said: "Our team is currently working hard to repair a burst water main on London Road. Due to the location of the burst and the size of the excavation, a road closure has been put in place.

"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience and are working to get everything back to normal as quickly as possible."

It has not been confirmed when the road will fully reopen.
