Measham: Man drove van at pedestrian before fleeing

A man who twice drove at and injured a pedestrian after leaving a pub has been jailed.

Nathan Wileman and his victim had been drinking in The Bird in Hand in Measham, Leicestershire, on 4 July 2020.

After they both left, Wileman drove his van at the pedestrian before fleeing the scene.

At Leicester Crown Court, the 34-year-old was sentenced to four years and four months in prison.

Leicestershire Police said after leaving the pub, Wileman had got behind the wheel of his Ford Transit pick-up and circled back to High Street, where his victim was outside the front of a supermarket.

Wileman turned his vehicle on him twice, leaving him with serious injuries to his foot, before fleeing past the pub in his damaged pick-up and out of the village, swerving and driving erratically.

The vehicle was later recovered in Heather, with Wileman arrested two days later.

'No remorse'

At a previous hearing, Wileman pleaded guilty to section 18 grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and dangerous driving. He was sentenced on Friday.

Wileman, of Wash Lane, Ravenstone, Coalville, was also disqualified from driving for four years and two months, which will begin upon his release from prison.

Det Con Berni Smith, who was the investigating officer, said: "We are pleased Wileman admitted his involvement at a previous hearing.

"Wileman deliberately drove at the victim, not just once but twice, with the aim of causing some serious harm, it was pure luck that the victim didn't sustain any life-changing injuries.

"He failed to stop at the scene and up until now has shown no remorse for his actions.

"Unfortunately the legal process has taken some time to complete but we hope following this conviction the victim can move on with his life and put the incident behind him."
