Three kittens were found abandoned in a taped-up cardboard box in Leicester.

The five-month-old kittens were taken to the RSPCA's Woodside Animal Centre after being discovered by a member of the public in Western Park on 19 February.

The animals were covered in fleas and were given treatment by staff at the charity.

RSPCA animal rescue officer Jack Curran said: "We are grateful to the member of the public who found the poor kittens."

There were two females and a male inside the box, with one of the female kittens being deaf.

The soggy and taped-up box, which the kittens were left in, had a few air holes for ventilation, the RSPCA said

Mr Curran added: "All the kittens are friendly and it's so sad to think someone just abandoned them in this way, even more so given that one of the kittens is deaf, so it must have been very confusing and frightening for her and her siblings.

"We understand the financial difficulties some people are experiencing right now, however abandoning your pet is never the answer."

The RSPCA said the kittens had been moved into a private boarding facility as Woodside was currently already full.

It is also asking for anyone with information about the kittens to come forward.
