Emergency services at the scene on Narborough Road

A small number of residents were evacuated after a car crashed into a takeaway and damaged a gas pipe.

The car was involved in a collision with another vehicle before ploughing into the Lucky Dragon in Narborough Road, Leicester, on Wednesday at about 18:40 GMT.

The car damaged a gas main, causing a leak, said gas company Cadent.

Engineers isolated the gas main to repair the pipe and residents returned safely to their homes.

Leicestershire Police confirmed no injuries were reported following the crash.

A force spokesperson added a small number of nearby properties were evacuated by the fire service afterwards.

The road was closed between Upperton Road and Imperial Avenue while emergency services responded.

Witnesses said they heard a bang and the smashing of a window.

The road was reopened shortly after 22:00 and people returned to their homes once the pipe was made safe.
