A man who raped a woman after he pushed her to the ground in an alleyway has been jailed.

Everette Morgan singled out the 23-year-old woman while she was walking through Leicester city centre in the early hours of 9 September.

The 33-year-old, of Bisley Street, Leicester, admitted one count of rape on Monday, the day his trial was due to begin.

He was sentenced on Tuesday to six years and three months in prison.

The victim had been out with friends when she was approached by Morgan shortly after 01:00 GMT.

She was heard screaming for help, prompting six people to come to her aid, police said.

Morgan tried to leave on his bike, but a member of the public took a photo of him, while another called the police.

The force said Morgan was spotted on CCTV and tracked to the area of Jubilee Square, and was detained about 12 minutes later.

'Horrific ordeal'

Det Con Adam Battley described the witnesses' actions as "truly commendable".

He added: "The statements they provided have been crucial in this case and I believe their actions that night prevented any further offending.

"The victim has shown incredible strength and courage throughout this horrific ordeal and I am pleased she has now been spared the added trauma of having to relive the details of that night in a trial."

Morgan has been placed on the sex offenders register for life, and will serve an additional month in prison for breaching a suspended sentence order for an unrelated offence.
