The M1 motorway in Leicestershire was partially closed after a lorry crashed, shedding its load and spilling sand on the carriageway.

The northbound route between junctions 23 and J23A, near Loughborough, was shut at about 06:40 GMT on Friday after the lorry's trailer overturned.

Motorists faced delays while traffic officers worked to clean up the debris and recover the vehicle.

The third lane of the carriageway reopened shortly before 07:10.

The remaining lanes reopened to traffic at about 09:30.

National Highways said drivers faced approximately five miles (8km) of congestion and delays of an hour.

Leicestershire Police said no-one had been injured in the crash and urged people to use alternative routes.
