Leicester: Easter break roadworks planned on major city route
- Published
Temporary road closures have been announced over the Easter holidays so a busy route into Leicester city centre can be resurfaced.
Leicester City Council said the work on the A50, between its junctions with Abbey Gate and Pingle Street, had been planned at a time when fewer vehicles were expected on the roads.
It said resurfacing, which will start on 25 March, could take 10 days.
However, the work is to be paused over the Easter bank holiday weekend.
The council said the work would start at the Abbey Gate junction with Woodgate, closing it until 28 March.
'Vital work'
Resurfacing works will then continue along Frog Island up to its junction with Pingle Street until 5 April, the council said.
The council said diversions would be put in place but added there would be "marshalled access" for residents and businesses.
Officials also said an inbound lane closure would remain in place on Frog Island and Northgate until late April, before a final phase of resurfacing is carried out from 29 April, for up to five days.
The council's director of city highways, Martin Fletcher, said: "This is a busy route in and out the city but in order to do this work safely, we need to close sections of it temporarily.
"Major resurfacing work of this nature is vital in order to keep the city's streets in good condition to cope with the demands of a growing city."
