Detectives are investigating a major fire at an industrial unit in Leicester.

Leicestershire Police said it was called to Great Central Street after the fire broke out just after 03:45 BST on Thursday.

About 40 firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to adjacent businesses.

Nearby flats were evacuated as a precaution while the blaze was extinguished.

The police said officers were working with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue investigators to establish what caused the fire in the unit, which housed a cash and carry.

Det Con Imogen Beasley said: "While we've spoken to several people already, I'd ask anyone who can help but who has not yet contacted police to do so.

"I'm particularly keen to speak to taxi drivers or other motorists with dashcams who were in the area. Anything the camera captured could help.

"I'd also urge anyone who was walking in the area and saw or heard someone acting in a manner that seemed unusual or suspicious to come forward."

The unit was severely damaged by the flames, and its remains were being demolished on Friday.
