Birstall: Supercar meet for man with muscular dystrophy
- Published
A collection of supercars pulled up in a town car park in support of a man with a severe form of muscular dystrophy.
Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Aston Martins turned out in Birstall, Leicestershire, for car enthusiast Shivam Nathwani.
The 26-year-old has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic condition that causes his muscles to weaken over time.
The Supercar Sunday event raised more than £1,600 for Rainbows Hospice.
"It means a lot," Shivam said. "The amount of love and support I get really shows.
"There were so many Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Aston Martins, Porsches. There were all sorts of varieties."
A car enthusiast since he was young, Shivam began reviewing luxurious cars on his YouTube channel during the coronavirus pandemic.
About 500 people attended the event on 12 May, with supercar community groups from Leicester, Birmingham and the Sikh Motors Club showcasing their vehicles.
Shivam's brother Pritesh, who helped to organise the event, said: "It was incredible. Getting this many people out in such a small community, bringing them all in one place.
"They came out in force, just to support our event and we couldn't have asked for a better day."
Shivam, who has had a tracheostomy and uses a wheelchair, spent much of last year recovering after being diagnosed with pneumonia.
Pritesh said: "It has been tough. His voice is starting to get a little bit weaker.
"It's taking a lot longer for us to do a lot more things because he's waking up a little bit later, but he's got to do an extra two or three courses of his medication."
The brothers have planned another car show at Leicester Racecourse on 18 August with supercar social media star Yianni Charalambous.
Pritesh added: "I think it's always been one of my brother's missions and dreams to show people that you can achieve what you want with limitations in life."
