Lincoln Christmas market goes ahead despite snow

The Lincoln Christmas market is going ahead, despite heavy snow falls and cancelled bookings, organisers say.

The market, which begins on Thursday, is one of the largest in the UK and attracts about 150,000 visitors.

But the heaviest November snowfall for 17 years has led to concerns over safety and a number of coach parties have already cancelled bookings.

The city council said they were still monitoring the situation but public safety was their top priority.

Further snow and freezing conditions have been forecast for the rest of the week.

One of the organisers, Rob Bradley, said: "We met as a safety group last Friday to plan what the impact of the weather might be and the sort of measures we might have to put in place.

"We are going to meet on Wednesday to see if there are any further implications for the event but at the moment the event is going ahead and we are looking at mitigating the impact of the weather."

He added that many all-weather walkways had already been put in place and extra grit bins were planned.
