Advice to drivers in icy weather in Lincolnshire

Police are asking drivers who have to abandon their vehicles in freezing conditions in Lincolnshire to let them know on their non-emergency number.

Officers and police dogs spent several hours searching for a driver on Sunday after a van hit a tree off the A57.

There was concern because blood was found at the scene, but the man was later found safe and well at home.

Travel disruption is continuing in Lincolnshire because of the snowy and icy weather.

Trains services were hit between Lincoln and Doncaster, Grimsby and Cleethorpes, with a reduced service on the East Coast Mainline.

Air travel was also affected - Doncaster's Robin Hood Airport was closed on and off since Tuesday but was fully reopened on Sunday.

Food supplies

Gritters have now put about 10,000 tonnes of salt on the county's roads compared to just 500 tonnes this time last year.

Highways officials said despite there being less snow, lorries were still getting stuck in icy conditions.

Volunteers were on standby this weekend in the county to give help to vulnerable people unable to leave their homes.

Teams from the Red Cross have been using 4x4 vehicles to reach the most difficult areas.

Meanwhile, the Nomad Trust shelter in Lincoln, which helps homeless people, said it had taken in more people since the snowy conditions began.
