North Kesteven travel scheme could be scrapped

Subsidised travel for pensioners could be scrapped by a Lincolnshire council.

North Kesteven District Council said its government grants are to be cut by up to 30%, forcing it to save £2.6m over the next two years.

In response, it is also looking to raise parking charges, cut customer services department hours and scrap pest control services.

The council will vote on the proposals in the new year.

Scrapping the travel tokens, which work alongside the national bus pass and can be used on taxis and voluntary car schemes, is expected to save £100,000 alone.

A council spokesman said: "The council is facing unprecedented reductions in its budgets over the next two years due to the severity of the local government finance settlement.

"Therefore difficult decisions will have to be taken by the council to ensure that a balanced financial plan for the next two years is established."
