Crackdown on illegal car racers in Lincolnshire

Cars have been seized and drivers fined in a police crackdown on so-called boy racers in two Lincolnshire towns.

Police in Grantham and Stamford said there have been several incidents of weekly "car cruise" gatherings.

Motorists driving in an anti-social and dangerous manner have been a problem in both towns over the last two years, police said.

Officers seized six vehicles after their owners ignored previous warnings about their driving.

Seven others were given a Section 59 notice - which warns drivers they face having their car seized if they carry on driving irresponsibly.

Penalty notices

Police said 10 drivers were reported for driving without due care and attention.

Another 50 motorists were issued with penalty notices for offences which included driving without a seatbelt, speeding and driving while using a mobile phone.

Acting Sgt Leanne Carr, of Lincolnshire Police, said: "We know this problem gets worse in the summer months and this operation was designed to draw a line in the sand and make our position clear early on in the year.

"Residents do not want large groups of people driving in an anti-social manner in Grantham and Stamford.

"We will scrutinise their driving behaviour and their vehicles, using all of the powers available to us to ensure that anyone stepping an inch out of line is dealt with in a robust manner."
