More than 50 churches have been targeted by lead thieves in Lincolnshire since January, police said.

About 20 sheets of lead were stolen in the most recent theft at Christ Church, Castlegate in Grantham, which was reported on Tuesday.

There have been about 60 thefts at 50 churches since the start of 2011 according to police figures.

Officers have asked people to report any suspicious activity near churches.

Ch Insp Mark Housley said: "We are calling for the public to take a real interest in the security of their local church.

"We all have a responsibility and a role to play in making our communities safe and if we work together we can make a real impact on this issue."
