Boston flooding: Defences to be rebuilt

Flood defences in a Lincolnshire town damaged by a tidal surge in December are to be demolished and rebuilt.

The Environment Agency will begin work on Monday to carry out the work.

A 28yd (26m) section of the River Witham, at Whitehorse Lane, Boston, was highlighted as an urgent priority after the town was flooded.

Boston was one of the worst affected areas during the last tidal surge. Work is expected to be complete before the next set of high tides in March.

An Environment Agency spokesman said the temporary wall would be removed before the old flood wall could be repaired.

He added: "We continue to work hard in Boston to repair the defences damaged during the tidal surge.

"We have been carrying out an immediate repair programme, repairing defences where they are most needed.

"We hope to complete the majority of permanent repairs to flood defences before March, but please be assured any temporary repairs have been designed to reduce the risk of flooding from high tides until permanent repairs can be finished."

Four other areas in the town highlighted by the agency have also been repaired.
