Louth cleans up after flash flooding but braces for rain

Sand bags prevented the worst of the damage when flash floods hit Louth but some shops lost stock

A market town hit by flash flooding on Friday, has continued cleaning up while bracing itself for more rain.

Louth, in Lincolnshire, was inundated with 2in (5cm) of rain in an hour, forcing the evacuation of some homes and making roads impassable.

Emergency services were also called out to Skegness and the surrounding area overnight.

A yellow alert for flooding remains in place for Louth with heavy rain predicted for Sunday.

Overnight, the Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service received calls for help in Skegness, Wainfleet, Ingoldmells, Friskney and Sutton Bridge.

And in neighbouring Cambridgeshire, drivers were trapped in cars when flash flooding hit parts of the county.

Only two weeks ago residents were told about an upgrade to Louth's sewerage system to prevent flooding in the event of heavy rain.

That work is set to continue in the next few weeks.

Mark Welsh, flood risk and development manager at Lincolnshire County Council, said it was difficult to predict flash flooding but said they were paying close attention to the weather forecast.

"The level of rainfall was intense. The nature of summer storms is very localised so the probability of it hitting twice in one particular spot is low, but it is a possibility," he said.
