Dozens of properties have been hit by flash flooding in Lincolnshire with several roads closed by the heavy rainfall, emergency services said.

Fire crews were called to 27 properties in the Grantham and Long Bennington areas late on Monday evening.

Great Gonerby postmaster Stuart Wilson said water was cascading down the streets during the rain storm.

"Within 10 minutes it got really dark and then it came down hard… it was horrendous."

'Sheer river'

"It was just a sheer river through here," he added.

A Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service said in a tweet: "Busy evening in the Grantham and Long Bennington area dealing with flooding incidents.

"Various properties attended and pumped out by crews."

Lisa Cockerton, who runs the Sixty2 Cafe in Long Bennington, said: "The water started pouring in both doors - it was a foot-and-a-half deep outside.

"I have never ever seen anything like this before."

Anthony Jacobs, landlord of the Royal Oak, said: "It was like a tropical rainstorm. It even floated barrels across the cellar.

"There is a tide mark of debris in the back of the property."
