Up to 2,000 asylum seekers could be placed at the site in Lincolnshire, the government has said

Four people arrested during a protest outside the former RAF Scampton have been released on bail, police said.

Lincolnshire Police said it had received reports of an assault and disorder outside the site's main entrance on Tuesday.

A woman and three men were held on suspicion of aggravated trespass and one of the men was also held on suspicion of assault, police said.

The Home Office plans to house up to 2,000 asylum seekers at the base.

A 44-year-old man from Grimsby, a 56-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman, both from Yorkshire, and a 42-year-old man from Lincoln were arrested at the ex-RAF station on Tuesday afternoon, a Lincolnshire Police spokesperson said.

They were released on bail with conditions not to go within 656ft (200m) of the base, they added.

Officers said inquiries into the incident were continuing.

The government's plan to convert the former home of the Red Arrows and wartime Dambusters squadron into an asylum camp has been met with strong opposition from local residents as well as West Lindsey District Council.

A judicial review into the Home Office's plans for the Scampton site is due to take place at the end of this month.
