The RSPCA said it had been "a sickening attack against a defenceless animal"

The death of a horse found "severely mutilated" in a Lincolnshire field has sparked an RSPCA investigation.

The three-year-old grey stallion, known as Tonto, was found by its owner with its genitals and an ear removed, at about 13:00 GMT on 22 December.

The RSPCA said the "appalling" incident happened off Whinbush Drive in Grantham.

A spokesperson urged anyone with information about the "sickening attack" to get in touch.

The spokesperson said the animal, which was found in an "isolated spot", was known to have been "extremely friendly and would follow people around the field".

"When the owner last saw Tonto on December 20, he was happy and healthy. Sadly when he returned on Friday 22 December, Tonto had been mutilated and killed," they added.

Following the incident the RSPCA has issued a warning to horse owners in the area to be "extra vigilant, given the nasty nature of this crime".
