An 84-year-old hospital porter "with an infectious smile" has been put forward for a national award.

Peter Quinlan only intended to complete three months at Lincoln County Hospital, but is still there 23 years later.

Wayne McIntosh, head of facilities, said the octogenarian, known as "Snowy" was "an inspiration to us all".

He has been shortlisted for the Dennis Southern Lifetime Achievement Award at the National MyPorter Awards.

Mr McIntosh added: "We all know how amazing Snowy is. His energy and personality are amazing and an inspiration to us all.

"For him to receive this national recognition gives us the perfect opportunity to highlight his dedication and commitment to patients and colleagues at Lincoln County Hospital.

'Wave of sunshine'

"It also lets us publicly say a massive thank you."

Mr Quinlan's nomination reads: "Peter has an infectious smile and warm personality that not only brightens up the day for patients, but also for all of the NHS colleagues that he meets throughout his shift.

"Peter says he loves being a part of such a great team, but the truth is that he is right at the heart of it. He says it is a privilege to be able to talk to patients and be able to put a smile on their faces during what is often a really worrying or stressful time."

The nomination goes on to state he is a "wave of sunshine that passes through the hospital", and he "brings a smile to the face of everyone he meets".

The awards ceremony takes place in London on 21 February.
