Grantham gets safer streets manager and CCTV system
- Published
A safer streets coordinator has been appointed in Grantham as part of a range of measures to improve public confidence.
Government funding will be spent on CCTV, extra night-time patrols and self-defence classes.
South Kesteven District Council said the Ask for Angela Initiative would also be extended.
The scheme allows people being harassed in pubs, clubs, and bars to request help from staff.
The authority said self-defence classes, anti-spiking drinks covers and spiking test kit will also be introduced.
Personal alarms and torches could be provided to women and girls.
The new safer streets coordinator, Peter Harrison, said: "It is really important as I think some people do feel unsafe especially at night-time."
The project has received £172,000 of government money and a further £93,000 from the council.
Councillor Rhea Rayside, cabinet member for people and communities, said the work would mainly focus on Grantham.
"Around 48 CCTV cameras will be upgraded or replaced as well as an increase in CCTV staffing, to cover weekend evenings," she said.
