Two men who tried to steal a cash machine using cutting equipment stolen from firefighters have each been jailed for three years.

Mohammed Khan, 36, and Kyle Maxwell, 29, were charged following the incident in Grantham on 4 December.

Officers said the men fled the scene in a stolen car before making off on foot through a farmer's field.

The pair were sentenced at Lincoln Crown Court on 29 January after both pleading guilty to burglary.

The incident caused more than £20,000 worth of damage, Lincolnshire Police said.

CCTV footage showed the men arriving at Tesco in Harrowby Lane in a stolen Audi estate, which had cloned number plates.

Khan was seen using equipment, reported stolen weeks before from Mid & West Wales Fire Service, to try and access the cash machine.

The men fled in the car after Maxwell, who had been acting as lookout, spotted police and threw bricks at their vehicle.

After officers tried to stop the Audi on the A151 near Colsterworth, more rocks were thrown before the vehicle ended up in a ditch after colliding with an oncoming armed response vehicle, the force said.

Khan, of Great Hampton Street, Wolverhampton, and Maxwell, of no fixed address, made off on foot through a farmer's field.

Maxwell was later captured on CCTV wearing one trainer and a plastic bag over his other foot in the nearby village of Corby Glen.

Khan was found submerged in a river, police said.

Maxwell was also sentenced to three months for theft, three months for taking a vehicle without consent and six months for criminal damage, to run concurrently.
