Thousands attend Redbridge traffic-free cycle ride

Up to 5,000 cyclists have been making the most of a traffic-free route though east London, organisers have said.

BMX champion Liam Phillips, who joined riders at the Redbridge Sky Ride, said he hoped it reminded people how much fun cycling was.

From 1100 until 1600 BST cyclists were able to take advantage of a 13.5km (8m) traffic-free route, passing Fairlop Waters Country Park.

It was the second of three London rides designed to encourage people to cycle.

Kulveer Ranger, the London's mayor's transport adviser, said: "The atmosphere was fantastic with the whole community coming together to take part.

"These events show us how important it is to get people from all areas of London onto two wheels."

Roads in the area were due to be closed to vehicles from 0900 BST until 1700 BST.

The London Sky Ride takes place on 5 September.
