Three week Tube closures 'considered', LU director says

London Underground (LU) is considering introducing more block closures for up to three weeks on the Tube to carry out upgrade work.

Parts of Tube lines have been shut in the past to carry out maintenance.

LU director Richard Parry said: "You will see a fresh approach to the planning of closures.

"Where we can put together pieces of work that we believe justify closures for 10 days or two weeks or three weeks, we will take those decisions."

Tube passengers on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines between Hammersmith and Edgware Road faced major disruption for three weeks last summer so upgrade work could be carried out.

Mr Parry said the closure had been "a success".

"If there are similar opportunities in the future, we will take them," he said.

"To keep the city moving, to get the upgrade and renewal work done, will take another ten years at least."

He added that LU would look at block closures in areas where there were "good alternatives" for travel.

"It generally won't be the busier parts of the city," he said.
