The Harp "retains its appeal as a true local" even though it is close to Trafalgar Square, Camra says

A pub in central London has been named national pub of the year by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra).

The Harp in Covent Garden was described as a "true gem" which was a "small, friendly, independent free house which has become a haven for beer choice".

Taps in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, was featured as one of the three runners-up, as well as the Salutation Inn, in Ham, Gloucestershire.

The Beacon Hotel in Sedgley, West Midlands, also made the shortlist.

"The most impressive aspect of The Harp is that it retains its appeal as a true local, even though its situated in the tourist heart of the capital," said Julian Hough, Camra's pubs director.

"What makes a great pub is the ability for it to welcome both regulars and first-time customers alike, and this is something it does to perfection."
