London Zoo penguins get England's largest penguin pool

London Zoo has unveiled the largest penguin pool in the country, which will eventually house a 200-strong breeding colony.

Some 65 of the world's most at-risk breeds have already moved into their 1,200 sq m home.

The new pool will have underwater viewing areas where visitors can see the birds swim.

Zoological Society of London (ZSL) said penguins were under threat from climate change, fisheries and pollution.

'They look happy'

The introduction of Humboldt and Macaroni penguins, as well as the Blackfooted and Rockhopper penguins which were already at the zoo, aims to highlight the research of ZSL's "penguinologist" Dr Tom Hart.

"It (the pool) is much bigger and deeper, and they can exhibit more of their natural behaviour," Dr Hart said.

"They look really happy."

The new pool is four times bigger and three times deeper than the penguins' previous swimming area at the zoo.

The new enclosure also has rocks and more space which closely resembles their natural environment.
