Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour's son has launched an appeal against his jail sentence for a rampage at a student fees protest in central London.

Charlie Gilmour, 21, of Billingshurst, West Sussex, received a 16-month jail term at Kingston-upon-Thames Crown Court in July.

He admitted to violent disorder after being seen hanging from a Union flag on the Cenotaph.

He joined thousands protesting against tuition fees in London last year.

Cambridge University student Gilmour was also spotted leaping on to the bonnet of a Jaguar car that formed part of a royal convoy of cars containing Prince Charles.

He was found to have hurled a rubbish bin at the vehicle.

A spokeswoman for the Judicial Office confirmed that papers have been lodged with the Court of Appeal.

But she added that "as yet, no decisions have been made about the case".
