Bow Roundabout: Cycling superhighway reviewed by TfL

The layout of a junction in east London is to be reviewed after the deaths of two cyclists in three weeks.

Transport for London (TfL) director Ben Plowden promised to look "very closely" at the cycling superhighway which ran through the Bow Roundabout.

He also said cyclists would be advised to avoid the route, which runs to the Olympic Park, during next year's Games.

Brian Dorling, 58, of Hounslow, west London, was killed on 24 October, while a 34-year-old woman died on Friday.

A post-mortem examination is due to be held later on the woman, whose name has not yet been released by police.

Mr Plowden said there had been "two terrible events" at the site.

He told London Assembly's transport committee that officials would carefully examine possible changes to the design or operation of the junction.

It is on one of four "superhighways" created around London to encourage cycling and run towards the Olympic site in Stratford.

Committee member Jenny Jones, the Green Party's mayoral candidate, said she was concerned about hazards at the roundabout when cyclists were riding to the Games.

But Mr Plowden said there would be "several preferred ways" to reach Stratford next summer.

"In fact we will be directing people deliberately away from the Bow Roundabout," he added.

The lorry driver detained over Mr Dorling's death was bailed until Friday, while a lorry driver was arrested after Friday's collision and bailed until 7 December.
