Lee Rigby murder: Talks 'ongoing' over Woolwich memorial

Plans for a memorial to Fusilier Lee Rigby who was murdered in a Woolwich street are being discussed.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich council said talks were "ongoing" with the soldier's family about a potential memorial, which they have indicated they would like in the area.

Fusilier Rigby was killed by two British Muslim converts on 22 May 2013.

Michael Adebolajo, 29, and Michael Adebowale, 22, drove into Fusilier Rigby before hacking him to death.

Adebolajo was given a whole-life term and Adebowale was jailed for 45 years.

A spokesman for the council said: "The council is in discussions with Lee Rigby's family about a memorial and when and where one might go.

"The family have said they would like one, but it might not just be for Lee Rigby and it depends on Army protocol and landowners too. The discussions are ongoing."

Earlier this year the council rejected calls for a memorial despite thousands of people signing an online petition for the 25-year-old to be given a permanent remembrance site in Woolwich.

Local MP Nick Raynsford said at the time a memorial would attract "undesirable interest from extremists".
