Palmerstone Road will remain shut into Sunday evening, London Fire Brigade said

A large fire at a car workshop in east London which spread to neighbouring flats and a shop has been brought under control.

About 100 firefighters attended the site on Palmerston Road, Walthamstow, where nearby homes were evacuated.

Residents have been advised to keep doors and windows closed while damping down continues.

No injuries have been reported, the London Ambulance Service said.

Palmerston Road will remain closed into Sunday evening, the London Fire Brigade said, and crews will stay on site.

Borough commander Richard Tapp said: "The whole of the workshop was alight as well as equipment and car parts within the single storey building.

"The blaze spread to a shop with flats above next door and firefighters are working hard to prevent further fire spread. As the wind is quite strong, it is fanning the smoke and we have had a number of calls about this too."

The cause of the fire is so far unknown and an investigation will take place, the fire service added.
