A murder investigation has begun after a woman in her mid-70s was found dead in south London.

Police were called to a house in Ladbrook Road, Thornton Heath, at about 10:40 BST on Wednesday where 76-year-old Nelly Akomah had been found dead by London Ambulance Service paramedics.

The Met said it was investigating whether there had been a burglary at her home. No arrests have been made.

The force added her family had been informed of her death.

Det Ch Insp Kate Blackburn said: "Nelly was active in her church and her loss will be keenly felt by many people."

She said detectives were "investigating the possibility that there was a burglary at Nelly's address".

"I must stress that our investigation is in its very early stages and we are working to establish what exactly has happened," she added.
