Residents in south-west London were asked to close their windows and doors due to a large fire at a waste disposal site in Herne Hill, Brixton.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said about 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines were called to Shakespeare Road.

It added the whole building had been alight causing it to partially collapse, with the fire producing large amounts of smoke.

Crews were called at 02:09 BST with the blaze being under control by 07:00.

In a statement, LFB said it had received more than 20 calls about the flames with crews from Brixton, Clapham, West Norwood, Peckham and surrounding fire stations attending.

It added 12 gas cylinders were removed as a precaution, because some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat.

LFB said two 100ft (32m) turntable ladders and water towers had been used to tackle the flames.

There have been no reports of any injuries, and the cause of the fire is not yet known.
