An LFB spokesperson said fireworks "should be treated with respect"

A fire in a block of flats is believed to have been caused by a firework set off on a 14th floor balcony, London Fire Brigade (LFB) has said.

The incident has promoted the LFB to warn people that fireworks are explosives and people should follow the Firework Code, external.

About 60 firefighters and eight fire engines tackled the blaze in Jodrell Road, Bow, east London on Sunday night.

One woman was assessed at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

The LFB added: "We encourage people to attend organised fireworks displays instead of using fireworks privately, but if you do choose to use fireworks, make sure you have enough space, buy them from a reputable, licensed seller and always look for a CE mark to make sure they're safe.

"Never drink alcohol and set off fireworks and don't throw fireworks or return to a firework once it has been lit."

The brigade was called at 19:18 GMT and the fire was under control by 19:51.

The fire was thought to have been accidental and caused by a stray firework, the brigade added.

Fire crews from Homerton, Bethnal Green, Stratford, Leyton and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
