Three homes have been evacuated after a sinkhole, which is 7m (23ft) deep, opened up in south-east London.

The London Fire Brigade said it was called to St Mary Street in Woolwich at 21:30 GMT on Tuesday after a burst water main caused the hole to appear.

Three fire engines and about 15 firefighters were called to the scene.

Crews evacuated 11 people from the three properties and put a 25m (82ft) cordon in place. There were no reports of any injuries.

The fire brigade said the sinkhole was 7m deep, 10m (32ft) long and 3m (10ft) wide.

St Mary Street was closed between Sunbury Street and Kingsman Street while crews worked to make the scene safe.

The brigade said firefighters left the scene shortly before 01:00 GMT on Wednesday.
