A world-renowned classical music conductor has appeared in court charged with a child sex offence.

Jan Latham-Koenig, 70, spoke to confirm his name and address at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

An offence is alleged to have taken place by phone or online, including through WhatsApp and a chatbot.

Mr Latham-Koenig, of South Kensington, was released on conditional bail to reappear at the same court on 9 February.

The exact charges against Mr Latham-Koenig would be detailed at the next hearing, the court was told.

He was arrested at London's Victoria railway station on Wednesday following an investigation by detectives from the Metropolitan Police's specialist crime command.

Mr Latham-Koenig was appointed an OBE in 2020 for services to music and UK-Russian cultural relations.

He has conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and all the BBC ensembles.
